Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, has a new role in the White House: a trade negotiator between China and the United States. The United States and China are trying to reach a first phase agreement to avoid imposing new tariffs on Chinese goods on December 15.
People familiar with the situation said that Kushner, who helped to achieve the US Mexico agreement (usmca), has been more and more directly involved in Sino US trade negotiations in recent two weeks.
Despite some progress in the negotiations, the two sides said they had not reached an agreement on the extent to which the United States would lift tariffs on goods to China and the specific scale of China's purchases of American agricultural products.
A White House official confirmed Kushner's involvement, but declined to provide details of its impact on the negotiations. The official, who asked for anonymity, said Kushner recently met with Chinese ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai.
Trade experts say the two met several times after trump took office to establish an informal relationship.
