North Korea, one of the world's most closed countries, plans to develop medical tourism next year, offering services such as cataract surgery, dental implants and cancer treatment to foreign tourists, most of whom may come from China.
The recently launched "treatment and Tourism Exchange" aims to take advantage of "the rising demand for medical and other tourism and follow the international trend", the Korean labor party organ daily labor News reported on Friday
The new state-owned entity will open a medical facility near the hot spring, which helps treat neuralgia, arthritis, heart disease and skin diseases, the newspaper said.
Folk tourism is one of the few businesses in North Korea not affected by the sanctions.
According to some analysts, as many as 350000 Chinese tourists have visited North Korea this year, and the North Korean government may earn as much as $175 million as a result.
